The AI Generation of Nurses: Preparing Students for Practice in an Uncertain Era
Thursday, October 22, 2026 | Noon–1:00 p.m. CT | Webinar
Katie Weis, a nursing capstone instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), and Tom Bottoms, a student conduct professional specializing in academic misconduct, discuss the implications of nursing students being trained in an era of uncertainty when technological innovation seems to be outpacing higher education and healthcare policy, and the development of ethical norms around the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Their presentation will include their observations working with today's college students and what research says about how students feel about and interact with AI.
Bios:
Katie Weis, DNP, RN, AGCNS-BC, is a Clinical Nurse Specialist and Clinical Assistant Professor at UWM. She has expertise in teaching excellence and bridging didactic and theoretical learning with clinical practice. She has extensive experience designing and teaching online RN-to-BSN Capstone courses, where experienced Registered Nurses develop evidence-based quality improvement projects within their practice settings and demonstrate competencies essential to baccalaureate nursing practice. As a culminating nursing experience, the Capstone moves students beyond clinical skill development to intentionally apply the systems thinking, evidence, and broader perspective expected of a BSN-prepared nurse.
Tom Bottoms is a Student Conduct Coordinator in the Dean of Students Office at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Tom serves as a resource for UWM’s 1500 faculty and 19,000 undergraduate students in the university’s academic misconduct process. Tom completed his bachelors at UW-La Crosse and has an MS in Higher Education Administration from Southern Illinois University.
